DECENTER is a research and innov­a­tion pro­ject aim­ing to deliv­er a robust Fog Com­put­ing Plat­form, cov­er­ing the whole Cloud-to-Things con­tinuum, that will provide applic­a­tion-aware orches­tra­tion and pro­vi­sion­ing of resources, driv­en by meth­ods of Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence. The under­ly­ing infra­struc­ture will span across bor­ders into a fed­er­a­tion, and will util­ize Block­chain and Smart Con­tracts to reach secure pro­cessing, auto­mated oper­a­tion and timely deliv­ery of responses.

Research and Innovation Action

Fog Computing Platform to orchestrate Cloud-to-Edge resources

DECENTER will design and devel­op a robust and secure Fog Com­put­ing Plat­form, based on exist­ing Open Source frame­works that provides applic­a­tion-aware orches­tra­tion of resources and zero-touch pro­vi­sion­ing of Microservices for Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence applic­a­tions based on their spe­cif­ic require­ments and described by means of Qual­ity of Ser­vice mod­els.

Blockchain-based framework fostering cross-border dynamic binding of resources

DECENTER relies on a frame­work that cata­lyses offer and demand for Edge resources. The innov­at­ive solu­tion is based on Block­chain to draft and seal Smart Con­tracts, mon­it­or their ful­fill­ment and grant rewards.

Smarter Internet of Things fabric

DECENTER enriches Inter­net of Things plat­forms with more intel­li­gent fea­tures able to cope with the data deluge com­ing from mul­tiple data sources includ­ing audio and video cap­able devices with built-in Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence algorithms for fea­ture extrac­tion, applic­a­tion-aware data fil­ter­ing redu­cing impact on the use of the net­work.

Hybrid decentralised Artificial Intelligence models exploiting DECENTER’s novel infrastructure

DECENTER evolves decent­ral­ised Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence mod­els that become pos­sible with a more react­ive and flex­ible resources infra­struc­ture, unlock­ing a huge poten­tial for innov­at­ive applic­a­tions. Among oth­ers, this innov­a­tion will address the needs for data loc­al­ity and time-crit­ic­al aspects of the Big Data prob­lem.

Crossing Safety

Aim­ing to increase ped­es­tri­an cross­ing safety in a smart city, we plan to equip a num­ber of ped­es­tri­an cross­ings with devices that enable mon­it­or­ing of ped­es­tri­ans mov­ing and will­ing to cross the road. The object­ive is to spot any poten­tial danger nearby that might put their safety at risk and provide means for noti­fic­a­tion alerts.



Test­ing a new, cost-effect­ive, robot­ic indoor trans­port solu­tion that will be spe­cially suited for ware­houses will auto­mate the trans­port pro­cess and free work­force for tasks that entail high­er added value. It will per­mit the incor­por­a­tion of the swarm robot sys­tem from Robot­nik into the cloud/edge sys­tem ser­vices, allow­ing enhan­cing the func­tion­al­ity of the robots by the use of Edge Com­put­ing and a cent­ral­ised Cloud.

Safety at Work

The goal of this scen­ario is to devel­op an applic­a­tion for smart noti­fic­a­tions at con­struc­tion sites, based on video streams and sensor data. The applic­a­tion will apply Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence meth­ods for real-time video-streams ana­lys­is. Sev­er­al applic­a­tion areas were iden­ti­fied includ­ing con­struc­tion mon­it­or­ing, con­struc­tion site man­age­ment, safety at work, early warn­ing against acci­dents and man­age­ment of resources and assets.

Safety at Home and Around

With the help of Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence and mon­it­or­ing, we will detect pos­sible dan­ger­ous situ­ations at home and around. The data will be col­lec­ted by Inter­net of Things devices and will vary from audio-video fea­tures to sensor read­ings, such as tem­per­at­ure or motion. The col­lec­ted data will be pro­cessed by Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence algorithms run­ning on the DECENTER’s Cloud-to-Edge con­tinuum and will res­ult in spe­cif­ic con­tinu­ously adapt­ing mod­els. Data pri­vacy con­cerns will be addressed by keep­ing raw data near the Edge.
